About Us

I love nature, I love the landscape, because it is so sincere. It never cheats me. It never jests. It is cheerfully, musically earnest.

History

Ohio Native Plant Month was established in 2019 as a nonprofit 501c(3) organization with the goal to pass legislation designating the month of April as Ohio Native Plant Month. With this legislation, the state of Ohio would become the first state in the country to designate one month each year to recognize native plants and the essential role they play. Nancy Linz, along with Former First Lady of Ohio Hope Taft shepherded House Bill 59 from the idea stage to the paper document that landed on Governor DeWine’s desk and was signed into law.

Nancy Linz has since moved out of the state of Ohio and is taking up the mission of establishing April as National Native Plant Month. She has passed the ONPM baton to Jane Ellison. Under Jane’s leadership, Ohio Native Plant Month has transitioned to Ohio Native Plants to continue to celebrate Ohio’s native plant heritage not only in the month of April, but throughout the year and to become a resource and inspiration for home gardeners across Ohio.

Ohio House Bill 59

On July 18, 2019, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bill 59 of the 133 General Assembly into law designating the month of April as Ohio Native Plant Month. This legislation makes Ohio the first state in the country to have an entire month dedicated to our native plants! The bill enacts section 5.2514 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Ohio Representative Scott Wiggam (District 1) was the Lead Sponsor of HB 59.

Ohio House Bill 59 States:
“The month of April is designated as ‘Ohio Native Plant Month’ to increase public awareness of Ohio’s native plants and the many benefits they provide to pollinators, Ohio’s economy, and the health of Ohio’s environment.”
