Native Plants in the Workplace
Incorporating native plants in the workplace benefits both the environment and the business
Businesses and organizations can support native plants through on-site landscaping, corporate partnerships, financial contributions, and employee engagement. One of the most direct ways for an organization to support native plants is by incorporating them into their own properties.
Places of worship can seek funding from the National Wildlife Federation
Sacred Grounds™ is a National Wildlife Federation program that recognizes congregations, houses of worship, and faith communities who both create wildlife habitat and actively link faith practices and caring for the environment. For more information, visit https://www.nwf.org/SacredGrounds/About
Approaches you can take with your organization:
Create biodiverse landscapes
Replace manicured, resource-intensive lawns with native plants, trees, and wildflowers that create habitat for local pollinators, birds, and insects.
Install specialized native gardens
Implement features like pollinator gardens to attract bees and butterflies, or rain gardens and bioswales to manage stormwater runoff.
Restore natural areas
For organizations with larger land holdings, focus on restoring degraded ecosystems by removing invasive plants and reintroducing native species. Some companies even participate in larger reforestation efforts.
Volunteer for conservation work
Provide a team of volunteers from your organization to volunteer with a local conservation group to help restore habitat and remove invasive plants.
Sponsor conservation projects
Fund habitat restoration efforts, such as reforestation partnerships with local nonprofits such as your Adubon Society chapter or nature center.
Partner with native plant nurseries
Source native plant materials from local nurseries to support their business and ensure the right genetics for your region.
Create demonstration gardens
Build native plant gardens on corporate campuses that employees and visitors can enjoy and learn from. For example, Google created pollinator corridors on its campus for this purpose.
Host community events
Organize or sponsor events that promote native plants, such as plant sales, educational talks, or community planting days.
